Prior to the development of the Isa Process technology, the standard approach was to use a starter sheet of high-purity copper as the initial cathode. These starter sheets are produced in special electrolytic cells by electrodeposition of copper for 24 hours onto a plate made of copper coated with oil (or treated with other similar face-separation materials) or of titanium.
The IsaMill Technology grinds the particles requiring size reduction, without over-grinding material at or below the required P80. The uniform grinding mechanism is also the reason why IsaMill scale-up is direct from laboratory to pilot to full scale (Weller et al 1999).
The IsaMill™ milling technology is a large-scale commercial high-speed stirred mill that is currently under development for coal micronising applications. The technology achieves very high energy efficiencies by using small milling balls in a high intensity configuration (> 300 kWmm −3).
