Longwall mining - Wikipedia

Longwall mining is a form of underground coal mining where a long wall of coal is mined in a single slice (typically 0.6–1.0 m (2 ft 0 in–3 ft 3 in) thick). The longwall panel (the block of coal that is being mined) is typically 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi) long and 250–400 m (820–1,310 ft) wide.

Comparison of Advancing and Retreating Longwalls ...

Comparison of Advancing and Retreating Longwalls The advantages of retreating longwalls compared to advancing are: Gate road formation is remote from face operations (less congestion at face ends, less supplies into longwall face area, face not held up waiting for gate road preparation or vice versa, no problems of dust production from gate ...

What is Longwall Mining? (with pictures) - wiseGEEK

May 27, 2020· The primary downside to this very productive technique is a prohibitive initial investment -- these mining machines usually run between 5 and 15 million dollars. Longwall mining replaces the historical "room-and-pillar method", whereby underground "rooms" of coal are manually extracted and pillars are left to support the roof so miners can work ...

Room and pillar mining - Wikipedia

Room and pillar (variant of breast stoping), is a mining system in which the mined material is extracted across a horizontal plane, creating horizontal arrays of rooms and pillars. To do this, "rooms" of ore are dug out while "pillars" of untouched material are left to support the roof overburden.Calculating the size, shape, and position of pillars is a complicated procedure, and is an area of ...

Abutment — In coal mining, (1) the weight of the rocks above a narrow roadway is transferred to the solid coal along the sides, which act as abutments of the arch of strata spanning the roadway; and (2) the weight of the rocks over a longwall face is transferred to the front abutment, that is, the solid coal ahead of the face and the back abutment, that is, the settled packs behind the face.

Design methods for stopes and sill pillars with ...

Jul 01, 1993· The design of pillars in cut-and-fill mining and open stoping in vertical and subvertical orebodies is of vital importance in optimizing mining operations. The primary requirement for a good and reliable design technique is the ability to represent the actual physical behaviour of the pillar. In this paper, a new methodology for stope roof and sill pillar design is proposed for the Zinkgruvan ...

Longwall Mining Overview | Introduction | underground COAL

LONGWALL MINING Overview. In the method of secondary extraction known as longwall mining a relatively long mining face (typically in the range 100 to 300m but may be longer) is created by driving a roadway at right angles between two roadways that form the sides of the longwall block, with one rib of this new roadway forming the longwall face.
